Getting more people excited about opera and concerts with new concert formats and experimental music theater is a central concern of conductor Christoph Altstaedt. His programs range from baroque music on original instruments to contemporary electronic music and hip-hop. After his first positions as répétiteur and conductor at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, he has made guest appearances at the Oper Zürich, Theater Basel, Komische Oper Berlin and the Salzburg and Savonlinna Festivals, among others. He has an ongoing collaboration with the Finnish National Opera Helsinki, Opera North and Glyndebourne on Tour. In the concert field, he has conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, London Philharmonia, the Ulster Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie, the Ensemble Resonanz, the hr-Sinfonieorchester, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, the Oslo Filharmonien, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Trondheim Symfoniorkester, among others, in recent seasons. From 2004 to 2011, he directed the Junges Klangforum Mitte Europa, an orchestra he founded that was made up of music students from three countries: Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany. Under the patronage of Presidents von Weizsäcker, Havel and Wałęsa, the orchestra gave concerts at historically significant locations such as Theresienstadt/Terezín and Kreisau/Krzyżowa and received several awards for its efforts to promote international understanding, including the »Praemium Imperiale« and the »Marion Dönhoff Prize«.
