Ingo Kerkhof

After studying in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin, Ingo Kerkhof initially worked as an assistant director at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 1997 he founded the ensemble »Kerkhof-Produktion«. This was followed by invitations to the Intercity Festival in Florence, the Zürcher Theater Spektakel and the Theater der Welt Festival.

Ingo Kerkhof has staged opera and theatre productions in Berlin, Bern, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Florence, Freiburg, Hamburg, Hanover, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Lübeck, Linz, Mannheim, Munich, Wiesbaden, Vienna and Zurich.

In addition to pieces from the classical opera repertoire, he is particularly interested in contemporary music theatre. He has directed Wolfgang Rihm's »Dionysos«, »Morgen und Abend« by Georg Friedrich Haas and »Benjamin« by Peter Ruzicka at the Heidelberg Theatre.

In addition to Salvatore Sciarrino's »Lohengrin« and the world premiere of »Comeback« by Oscar Strasnoy, Ingo Kerkhof brought the nationally acclaimed rediscovery of Agostino Steffani's opera »Amor vien dal destino« to the stage of the Staatsoper Berlin Opera together with René Jacobs.

The International May Festival in Wiesbaden presented Ingo Kerkhof's world premiere production of Helmut Oehring's ‘Agota’ with the Ensemble Modern. He made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival 2022 with »Nach Tristan« in the context of »Diskurs Bayreuth«.

Important partners on the musical side were the conductors Gabriel Feltz, Patrick Lange, Markus Stenz, Elias Grandy, Alexander Liebreich, Ivan Repušić, Peter Rundel, Konrad Junghänel and René Jacobs.

Ingo Kerkhof has taught at the »Franz Liszt« Academy of Music in Weimar, the Bayerische Theaterakademie »August Everding« in Munich and the Universität der Künste Berlin. In 2022, Ingo Kerkhof was appointed Professor of Music Theatre at the Kunstuniversität Graz.

Ingo Kerkhof has won the 2024 Faust Theatre Prize for the staged German premiere of György Kurtág's opera »Fin de Partie« at the Oper Dortmund.
