The Chœur Symphonique de Montpellier was founded in 2006 by René Koering, General Music Director of the Montpellier Opera (1985-2011) and founder of the Radio France Festival, and conductor Hervé Niquet, who at the time was holding an artist residency in Heidelberg's twin city. Originally, it was a loose association of particularly qualified choral singers from the city who came together occasionally for orchestral productions. Over the years, the large project choir has developed into a permanent fixture in the cultural landscape of the Montpellier metropolitan region with its own director and artistic director. Its repertoire ranges from the classical repertoire of the 18th century to contemporary works and world premieres. Since its inception, the Chœur Symphonique has worked with high-calibre guest conductors such as Hervé Niquet, Alain Altinoglu, Lawrence Foster, Ennio Morricone, David Niemann, Daniel Bargier and Michel Piquemal. In the current season, Chiara Maccotta is responsible for rehearsals and vocal training. The concert in the twin city of Heidelberg is a premiere, as it is the Chœur Symphonique de Montpellier's first guest performance abroad.
