To advance his international career, Hansung Yoo has been working freelance since the 2022/23 season. He recently made his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Kurwenal in »Tristan und Isolde«. In the 2022/23 season, he received excellent reviews for his performances as Don Carlo di Vargas in »La forza del destino« at the Saarbrücken State Theater and as Ping in »Turandot« at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano.
From 2013 to 2022, Yoo was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Kassel, where he performed roles such as Papageno in »The Magic Flute«, Figaro in »The Barber of Seville«, Marcello in »La Bohème«, Mercutio in »Romeo and Juliet«, and the title role in »Eugene Onegin«. He also appeared at the Staatstheater Nürnberg as Sharpless in »Madama Butterfly« and at the Theater Koblenz as Amfortas in »Parsifal« and Count Luna in »Il Trovatore«. In Koblenz, he also performed the title role in »Rigoletto«.
Hansung Yoo was born in South Korea in 1985 and studied voice at the Korea National University of Arts and the Robert Schumann Music Academy. He completed his studies with a master's degree and concert exam at the University of Music and Theater Hamburg. Yoo has won numerous singing competitions, including first prize at the IVC competition in 2008 and awards at international competitions such as the ARD and Tchaikovsky Competitions.
He has worked with renowned conductors such as Daniele Callegari, Francesco Angelico, Sir Donald Runnicles, and Sir Antonio Pappano. In addition to his stage presence, his collegial and energetic personality is highly regarded.
Hansung Yoo is making his debut in the title role of Verdi’s »Macbeth« at the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg.
