Thando Zwane

Baritone Thando Zwane is born in the Kingdom of Eswatini (former Swaziland) and is a graduate of the Vocal Art Department at the Tshwane University of Technology, where he studied with Thami Zungu and Laetitia Orlandi.

During his studies, he performed leading baritone roles including the title role in »Don Giovanni«, Mephistopheles in »Faust«, Ford in »Falstaff«, and Count Almaviva in »Le nozze di Figaro«.

He has appeared at venues such as Cape Town Opera, Opéra Les Azuriales in Nice, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, and Garsington Opera, where his roles have included Cecil in »Maria Stuarda«, Capellio in »I Capuleti e i Montecchi«, Ibn-Hakia in »Iolanta«, Narumov in »The Queen of Spades«, and Figaro in »Il barbiere di Siviglia«. At Garsington Opera, he also covered the role of Don Pizarro in »Fidelio«.

Zwane’s competition successes include the Audience Prize at Opéra Les Azuriales (2019) and both the Audience Prize and a semi-finalist placement at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Jurmala (2024). In the 2024/25 season, he received the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award.

Following his participation as an Alvarez Emerging Artist at Garsington Opera, he joined the Mascarade Emerging Artist Programme in September 2025.

In the 2025/26 season, he makes his debuts at Mascarade Opera partner houses, appearing as Kilian in »Der Freischütz« and the Impresario in »Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali (Viva la mamma!)« at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, as well as Polizeikommissar/Notar in »Der Rosenkavalier« at Theater und Orchester Heidelberg.
