Alice Meregaglia, born in Tradate, Italy, has been director of the Hamburg State Opera choir since the start of the 2025/26 season. She studied piano at the conservatory in Venice, musicology and accompaniment in Milan, and orchestral conducting in Strasbourg. From 2012 to 2015, she was a solo répétiteur at the Opéra national du Rhin. In 2016, she joined the Theater Bremen, initially as choir director and vocal coach, later also as director of studies and kapellmeister. In 2023/24, she moved to the Staatstheater Darmstadt as choir director with conducting duties. The works she has conducted include Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, La rondine, La Cenerentola, L'elisir d'amore, Hello, Dolly! as well as Fauré's Requiem, Rossini's Petite messe solennelle, and Puccini's Messa a 4 voci. She also works as a répétiteur in numerous masterclasses (with Teresa Berganza, Luciana Serra and Renata Scotto, among others). Guest engagements have taken her to the Bayreuther Festspielen in its anniversary year 2026, and in the past to the Bregenzer Festpielen, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Opéra national du Rhin, Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, Opéra de Nice, Trondheim Opera, Norrlandsopera, Saluzzo Opera Academy, Festival de musique sacrée de Nice, Festival Opus Opéra de Gattières, and the Festival OperAffinity in Italy. Alice Meregaglia is the winner of the 2018 Kurt Hübner Prize and teaches recitative performance and singing in Italian at the University of Bremen.
