Bassam Ghazi

Bassam Ghazi is a freelance director and Stadtdramaturg. He moves between cultures and perspectives, engaging with history and stories: biographical, post*migrant, diverse, inclusive and disintegrated.

At the Schauspiel Köln, he was Artistic Director of the IMPORT EXPORT KOLLEKTIV from 2015 to 2021. From 2021 to 2024, he shared the artistic directorship of the Stadt:Kollektiv – the participatory division at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus – with Birgit Lengers.

Prior to that, he worked at the GRIPS Theatre in Berlin, the COMEDIA Theatre in Cologne, for the Forum Ziviler Friedensdienst in Beirut, the Sommerblut Festival in Cologne and the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, amongst others.

As a director, he staged »Real Fake«, »Concord Floral«, »Schöne neue Welt«, »Jugend ohne Gott« and »Vatermal« at the Schauspiel Köln.
At the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, he directed »Working Class«, »Dschinns«, »Romeo und Julia«, »Verbrennungen« and »Solingen 1993«. The production won the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST in 2024 in the Genrespringer category. »Mama, bitte lern Deutsch« is Bassam Ghazi’s first work at the Theater & Orchester Heidelberg.
