Johannes Schwarz

The baritone Johannes Schwarz will join the ensemble of Theater & Orchester Heidelberg from the 2026/27 season.

He was previously engaged at the Erfurt Theatre, where he appeared in roles such as Masetto in »Don Giovanni«, Shaunard in »La bohème« and the title role in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s »Elias«.

Whilst still a student, he made his debut in the production »Liebestod« at the Bayreuth Festival of Young Artists, at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern as Biterolf in a new production of Wagner’s »Tannhäuser«, and at the Landesbühnen Sachsen in von Einem’s »Der Prozess«, as Bottom (in Britten’s »A Midsummer Night’s Dream«) in Pforzheim, and as the title character in Puccini’s »Gianni Schicchi« at the Schlossfestspiele Wernigerode.

His studies were followed by a fixed-term contract at the Staatstheater Meiningen, as a result of which he made his debut in roles including Figaro in »The Marriage of Figaro« and Wolfram von Eschenbach in »Tannhäuser« (at the Wartburg, a satellite venue).

As a soloist in oratorios and recitals, he has performed at venues including the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Semperoper in Dresden and the NDR Sendesaal in Hanover.

Johannes Schwarz hails from the Münsterland region and, after completing his school music examinations (majoring in horn) in Frankfurt, studied singing at the HMTM Hannover under Peter Ling. Masterclasses with Ingeborg Danz, Peter Schreier, Falk Struckmann, Waltraud Meier and Petra Lang further rounded off his musical training. His training was also supported by a multi-year scholarship from the Oscar-Vera Ritter Foundation and the Nicolaus Bruhns Prize for Singing, as well as scholarships from the Richard Wagner Association, the German Music Council and the German Orchestra Foundation.
