Matthew Peña

Since the 2026/27 season, Matthew Peña has been a member of the ensemble at Theater & Orchester Heidelberg.

Prior to that, from 2023 to 2026, he was at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, where he appeared as Narraboth in »Salome«, Mime in »Das Rheingold«, Bénédict in »Béatrice et Bénédict«, Baron Kronthal in »Der Wildschütz«, Chevalier de la Force in »Dialogues des Carmélites«, the landlady Josepha Vogelhuber in »Im weißen Rössl«, Asle in »Sleepless« and in »Carmina Burana«, Hauptmann in »Wozzeck« and Bob Boles in »Peter Grimes«.

His most recent guest engagements include Hauptmann in »Wozzeck« at the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen, both nurses in »The Coronation of Poppea« at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, Mime in »Siegfried« at the Virginia Opera, Jack/Tobby Higgins in Weill’s »The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny« at the Theater Bonn, Mitch in »A Streetcar Named Desire« at the Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein, Heurtebise in »Orphée« by Philip Glass at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, 3rd Jew in »Salome« at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and 1st Fisherman in »Sleepless« at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.

Further highlights include engagements at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Leipzig Opera, the Kiel Theatre, the Volkstheater Rostock, as well as the role of »The Hunchback« in »Die Frau ohne Schatten« with Kirill Petrenko at the Bavarian State Opera, and as Edmondo in »Manon Lescaut« at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía under the baton of Plácido Domingo. He sang the same role during a guest performance with the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Muscat, Oman, and recorded it with Andrea Bocelli and Mr Domingo conducting (Decca). Matthew Peña is from Modesto, California. He obtained his bachelor’s degrees in music and politics at Oberlin College and Conservatory and completed his master’s degree in music at the Manhattan School of Music.
