The mezzo-soprano Sophia Damaris, born in Germany, studied solo singing and opera at the Konservatorium Wien (now: Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien), graduating with distinction in both programs. While still a student, she was a finalist in several international competitions (including the prestigious Francisco Viñas Competition in Barcelona) and made her stage debut as Marie in Smetana’s »Prodaná nevěsta« at the Stadttheater Baden near Vienna, where she also appeared as Pamina and First Lady in Mozart’s »The Magic Flute«. Other roles included Liu in Puccini’s »Turandot« and Lisa in Lehár’s »The Land of Smiles«. At the Gut Immling Festival, she sang Contessa Ceprano in Verdi’s »Rigoletto« and Anna in »Nabucco«.
This was followed by several engagements in Italy, including as Cio Cio San in Puccini’s »Madama Butterfly« at the Mythos Opera Festival in Sicily and the title role in »Tosca«. After switching to the mezzo-soprano fach, she was engaged as Ciesca in Puccini’s »Gianni Schicchi« at Teatro Lucca.
On the concert stage, she sang the soprano solos in the requiem settings by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Michael Haydn at the Musikverein Wien, Beethoven’s »Missa Solemnis« as part of the Erl Festival, and Alban Berg’s »Sieben frühe Lieder« with the Universitäsorchester Dresden.
As a chorister, she was a guest at the Frankfurt Opera in 2020 and 2022 and has been a member of the opera chorus of Theater und Orchester Heidelberg since 2022, where she also regularly appears in solo roles.
