Magdalena Fuchsberger

Magdalena Fuchsberger was born in Salzburg, studied German language and literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna, and musical theatre directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. During Jossi Wieler’s tenure as artistic director, Fuchsberger was a stage director at the Stuttgart State Opera. She has been a freelance musical theatre director since 2015 and lives in Berlin.
In 2023, Magdalena Fuchsberger made her directorial debut at the Vienna State Opera with »Dialogues des Carmélites« (Poulenc), followed in 2025 by productions of »Alcina« (Handel) at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, »La Bohème« (Puccini) at the Theater Chemnitz, and »Die Zauberflöte« (Mozart) at the Aalto-Theater Essen, whose interpretation was honoured by the specialist magazine »Opernwelt« in the category »Most Unusual Opera Experience of 2025«.
She also directed »One Touch of Venus« (Weill) at the Graz Opera, a highly acclaimed »Falstaff« (Verdi) at the Mainfranken Theatre in Würzburg, and »Dido and Aeneas« (Purcell) at the Lucerne Theatre.
In previous years, her productions included »The Life of Orestes« (Krenek), »The Blacksmith of Ghent« (Schreker) and »The Cunning Little Vixen« (Janáček) at the Theater Münster, »Death in Venice« (Britten) at the Theater Heidelberg, and the world premiere of »Being Upright and Becoming Human: Sophie Scholl« (Obermüller).
Further engagements have taken her to venues including the Staatstheater Darmstadt, the Stadttheater Gießen and the Theater Hagen, where her performance in »Simone Boccanegra« (Verdi) in 2019 was hailed as »one of the best Verdi productions in Germany in recent years« and earned her a nomination in the »Young Artist of the Year« category. The Hagen Theater also hosted the world premiere of Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen’s »A Room of One’s Own« – a co-production with the Savonlinna Opera Festival. Further international engagements included Wagner’s »The Flying Dutchman« at the Opera Festival in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and Verdi’s »La traviata« at the National Opera in Tirana.
