3rd Bachchor Concert
Johann Sebastian Bach: Mass in B Minor BWV 232
Peterskirche
Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor took over 25 years to compose. It represents an impressive musical legacy that Bach completed in 1749 just one year before his death. »The greatest work of art the world has ever seen!« praised Bach's sacred composition in 1811 by conductor Carl Friedrich Zelter. With its complex fugues, choral sections, arias, and performance duration of about two hours, it surpasses all Mass settings known up to that time. In addition, it is another example of the great composer's stylistic versatility and also holds a special place in his complete works: as a »Missa tota,« the B Minor Mass is Bach's only complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass.
