3rd Philharmonic Concert

Lera Auerbach: »De profundis« – Concerto No. 3 for violin and orchestra / Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D Major op. 43

Concert
Aula der Neuen Universität
Musical Direction

Commissioned by the violinist Vadim Repin, Russian-Austrian composer Lera Auerbach wrote her Third Violin Concerto in 2015. The violinist premiered the piece in Novosibirsk that very same year. The lament »de profundis« is a frequent work title. It refers to the first words of Psalm 130, »Out of the depths I have cried unto thee, O Lord«.

Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 is his most popular. The composer attempted to distance himself from earlier judgments with this piece, creating the foundation for a new style. In greater stylistic maturity than before, the previously dominant gloom has here been replaced by Mediterranean light. Sibelius wrote his Symphony No. 2 under the impression of a journey through Italy, completing it in Helsinki.
