Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony no. 2 D Major op. 36
Alter Saal
Music of the future: While the second symphony is usually considered the conclusion of Beethoven’s first period still influenced by Mozart and Haydn, it already heralds new times with its boundless energy and bubbling nervousness of the outer movements, the martial sounds of military fanfares and its immense peaks. It is no coincidence that Beethoven presented this work alongside two other revolutionary works during the premiere in 1803: the third piano concert and the oratorio »Christ on the Mountain of Olives«. All three works share a high pathos, the heralding of noble human ideals and a sound landscape characterised by military notes.
With »BEEEEEEEEEthoven!« you can enjoy all nine of Beethoven’s symphonies as a cycle spaced over two seasons: The season 2024/25 will see the performance of the first four symphonies, the following season will comprise another four, culminating in the grand finale of his 9th symphony as Philharmonic Concert.
