JEZEBEL
by Cherish Menzo
Zwinger 3
[recommended for ages 16 and up]
Cherish Menzo’s solo performance »JEZEBEL« draws inspiration from the video vixen: female models who appeared in hip hop music videos in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Despite the explicit lyrics (usually written by men) and the sensual, seductive, and scantily clad appearance of the video vixen, their performances had a great influence on the aesthetics of these clips; as well as on the popularity of the (male) artist. The repetitive images reinforce stereotypes associated with Black women. How might this video girl redefine herself today? Jezebel, a figure often associated with immorality, navigates the landscape of hip hop culture in search of ways to reclaim her image. Can she deconstruct the controversial stereotype of the hip hop honey?
