Prologue on central european modern dance in the 1920ies by Dr. Miriam Althammer / The original painting »Bildnis der Tänzerin Anita Berber« by Otto Dix is currently on display at Kunsthalle Mannheim in the exhibition »Die Neue Sachlichkeit. Ein Jahrhundertjubiläum«

Exactly 100 years ago, in the spring of 1925, German artist Otto Dix painted a portrait of the extravagant dance icon of the Weimar Republic: Anita Berber. The red painting captures the radical, self revealing artist, marked by her excessive lifestyle. Choreographer Martin Stiefermann and dancer Brit Rodemund have intensively analysed Anita Berber’s choreographic work. The descriptions of Anita Berber’s dances by Czech choreographer Joe Jenčík from 1930 served as an important source. In their lecture performance, MS Schrittmacher will present the work of the dancer and choreographer to the audience using dance research findings and selected solos, accompanied live by pianist David Schwarz.
