3rd Castle Concert: Aconcagua
Tango sinfonico
Schlosshof
The bandoneon is an exotic instrument in the world of classical music. Astor Piazzolla, the Argentinian composer, has created large-scale opuses for the instrument. Skilfully combining European music traditions with the passionate tango rhythms of his home, he created the Tango Nuevo. Dedicated to the highest mountain of the Americas located in the Argentinian Andes, his bandoneon concert from 1979 is called »Aconcagua«. Initially, tango was associated with indecency. The music spread in brothels and in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where the poorer population, immigrants from all over Europe, lived. Among the upper classes, it was infamous. Around the turn of the century, the harbour district of Buenos Aires, La Boca, was considered the centre of tango. Only at the beginning of the 20th century, when it conquered Paris, the tango became socially acceptable.
