The Island of Perverts
A German singspiel by Rosa von Praunheim
Rosa von Praunheim about his play: »If you see this play, you can be certain that it was written after Rosa von Praunheim’s death of unnatural causes. Originally, »The Island of Perverts« was a musical about Putin, but the dramaturges of Deutsches Theater didn’t think Putin’s malice was entertaining enough, which is why Rosa turned Germany’s new divas Sarah and Alice into his protagonists. As »Zeitenwende« (turn of an era) was chosen as word of the year, we realise that the times of happy liberal thinking are over, democracy receives a new meaning and liberal cultural work is set to be severely punished soon – by banishing it to the island of perverts. Rosa is jolly glad he won’t be around for that, looking up at this scene with absurd humour, which will soon replace audiences’ reality.«
After »Jeder Idiot hat eine Oma, nur ich nicht« (Every idiot has a grandma but me) and »Hitlers Ziege und die Hämorrhoiden des Königs« (Hitler’s goat and the haemorrhoids of the king) Rosa von Praunheim completes his trilogy with »The Island of Perverts«. Unlike at previous events, this time he turns his gaze towards the near future: What if? Bleak prospects or rosy outlooks?
