Goldie
A digital requiem / by Emre Akal / Direction: Emre Akal / Gastspiel Schauspiel Leipzig
In the course of a relationship, you collect many memories as a couple. Some are happy ones, others rather less so. In any case, they are shared moments, which become the special story of two people. SHE would like to continue their story as a couple by putting on VR glasses. She is looking to meet the avatar of her late partner. A first encounter but also one that feels familiar. The man opposite her looks like him, sounds like him and makes jokes like him. It’s her partner’s digital legacy that turns this animated character into him. Text messages, voice mails, pictures he posted. And a well-programmed software, which continues his character based on this material.
It’s not just the protagonist who goes along with this technical development: The whole cast enters into this experiment of a live theatre play by means of motion capture, face tracking, synchronisation, VR glasses on stage and a projection for the audience, creating a continued interplay between illusion and making-of. AI technologies like ChatGPT and Bing were even part of the writing process. The lines between humans and machines become more and more blurred in this cooperation until they become undistinguishable. What exactly is the core of being human?
Nominated for the Deutscher Theaterpreis DER FAUST 2024 in the category »mixed genre«.
