Alcibiades
La libertà contenta / Baroque opera in three acts by Agostino Steffani
Rokokotheater Schwetzingen
Alcibiades, banished from Athens, goes into hiding incognito in enemy Sparta, where Timea, the fiancée of the Spartan king, falls for his charm. At the same time, the Athenian princess Aspasia falls into Spartan captivity, but remains undiscovered thanks to her false identity as a slave. The fact that the king himself has an eye on her — and that Alcibiades, too, is interested — leads to a furious game of mistaken identities in which jealousy, intrigue, and great emotions abound, but where the love of freedom triumphs over all convention.
The Pandovian Agostino Steffani was a wanderer between worlds. Ordained as a priest in Rome, he made a name for himself in Germany as a composer. In addition to posts in Hanover and Düsseldorf, he also served as rector of Heidelberg University in the Palatinate in 1703/04.
The production of the decorative parts is carried out in the workshops of the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg.
