Every Man Dies Alone

based on the novel by Hans Fallada

Theatre
Alter Saal

Distributing over 200 post cards, which they hide in stairways and backyards, a married couple from Berlin, Anna and Otto Quangel, call on people to resist Hitler’s regime. The death of their only son has robbed them of their purpose in life. The secret messages declaring war on the regime give them a new purpose.

Hans Fallada’s last novel is based on real events: Gestapo files from 1942 show that a couple was denounced and sentenced to death. The manuscript was written in less than four weeks in the fall of 1946, shortly before Fallada’s death. With it, he created a panoramic view of the life of the small people in Berlin during the Nazi regime. The Quangel’s selfless love possesses a kind of utopian explosive force: It’s nuanced, moving and has lost none of its relevance today.
