Clytemnestra has seized power in Mycenae. She murdered her husband Agamemnon upon his return from the Trojan War, in revenge for the death of her daughter Iphigenia. The young woman was sacrificed by Agamemnon to ensure »favourable winds«. Now Clytemnestra is trying to establish a female-dominated alternative to power. But her second daughter, Electra, sides with her dead father. Phryne also gets caught up in the power struggles of one of Greece's most difficult mythical families: she is a hetaera, an unfree sex worker kept at court, who would like nothing better than to blow up the whole old system at once ...
Director Jana Vetten was awarded DER FAUST 2025 theatre prize in the »Drama Direction« category for her Heidelberg production of »Nora«. Now she is working in Heidelberg again and, with »We Are Family«, is presenting a multi-layered ancient story in a new guise, which was commissioned by the Schauspiel Köln in 2024. Tine Rahel Völcker wrote a new ending for Heidelberg, which is now being premiered.
The production of the decorative parts is carried out in the workshops of the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg.
