The mood of a lonely and lost character, the state of a soul recreated as sound: Franz Schubert’s »Winterreise« (Winter Journey) is a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. Created in 1827, it is considered the apogee of German art songs. Composer Hans Zender transposed it for tenor voice and small orchestra: Premiered in Frankfurt in 1993, his interpretation is an empathic yet radical revelation of the original’s disturbing elements and a unique and subtly differentiated approach to the sound of Wilhelm Müller’s poems.
