»Lontano doloroso«, meaning far away, painful, is like the sound of the cor anglais. Christian Jost’s work of the same title is characterised by a warm atmosphere and composed with a focus on expression, less on virtuosity.
Created in 1820, Franz Schubert’s overture for the opera »Die Zauberharfe« (The Magic Harp) was not well-received by audiences. As a consequence, his music in the form of a sonata was used as a prelude to the play »Rosamunde«, taking the listener along on a musical journey from the dark into the light. In 1828, shortly before his death, Franz Schubert is writing his 10th symphony in D major. His drafts for three movements have survived. Among Schubert’s major ideas is his andante, which, in its lyrical form, is reminiscent of his »Winterreise« (Winter Journey) or Mahler’s »Kindertotenlieder« (Songs on the Death of Children).
There is probably no other symphony that takes Jean Sibelius as long to write as his fifth. The swan theme in the last movement is one of the most famous ones of his oeuvre: »God will open the door for a moment and his orchestra will play the symphony no. 5,« he writes to a friend.
