Song Soiree »And found one another«

Songs by Alma Mahler, Gustav Mahler and Alban Berg

Musical Theatre
Alter Saal

The marriage between composer Gustav Mahler and Alma Schindler, daughter of a Viennese artist and salon lady, was not an easy one. It weighed heavily on Alma, who composed herself and was taught by Alexander Zemlinsky in her youth, that she had to put her own artistic ambitions aside in her marriage. The fact that Gustav Mahler ultimately published his wife's works, including her »Five Songs«, can be seen as a kind of attempt at reconciliation.

Indre Pelakauskaite and Nanami Yamane place this song cycle in the context of Gustav Mahler's »Rückert Lieder«. And the »Seven Early Songs« by the Mahler's mutual friend Alban Berg are included in the programme as a mediator between the two.

Few other genres represent individual artistic expression better than the art song. Members of the opera ensemble invite audiences to the Alter Saal to discover the many different facets of the art of songs from classic to modern, showing this popular genre’s diversity. Every evening promises a unique musical experience, centering on our singers as well as the musical sophistication of art songs.
