Fidelio

Opera in two acts by Ludwig van Beethoven

Musical Theatre
Marguerre-Saal
Libretto by Joseph Ferdinand Sonnleithner and Georg Friedrich Treitschke / Semi-scenic performance with spoken texts by Ulrike Schumann

Arrested by his political opponents, Florestan disappears without a trace. His wife Leonore though thinks he might be alive. Pretending to be Fidelio, she takes on a job in the prison where she suspects Florestan is kept. Her intuition soon proves to be right, but how to free him? In its third version, »Fidelio« was premiered in Vienna in 1814 and is a call for humanism and human dignity, opposing injustice and the abuse of power, quite in line with the ideals of the revolution of 1789.
