A Place in our Memory
Inclusive theatre project on memorial culture in Heidelberg
We want to honor, but not in silence. We want to remember, but not alone. We want to talk about the past, loudly and with many voices. We are making space in our memory.
In the crimes committed by the Nazi regime against people with disabilities and illnesses, hundreds of thousands of people were forcibly sterilized and murdered from 1934 onwards. Among them were people from Heidelberg and the surrounding area. Today, they are immortalized in files, they are a diagnosis and sometimes a name on a memorial plaque. But who were these people? What might have moved them?
The inclusive ensemble follows the tracks of Heidelberg citizens and gives their biographies a tangible space in the city's history.
Congratulations!
»A Place in Memory« wins first prize in the theatre competition andersartig gedenken on stage (remembering differently on stage) for inclusive adult theatre.
andersartig gedenken on stage is a nationwide theatre competition organised by the Förderkreis Gedenkort T4 (T4 Memorial Support Group) in cooperation with the Foundation for the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The competition invites school theatre groups and inclusive adult theatre groups to develop and perform plays based on the biographies of victims of Nazi »euthanasia« crimes.
andersartig gedenken on stage honours productions that shape commemorative culture in new, artistic and participatory forms. In making its decision, the jury paid »particular attention to the idea and design, the artistic quality, the presentation of historical facts, especially the biographies of the victims, and the approach to inclusion.«
The patron is Jürgen Dusel, the Federal Government Commissioner for Matters relating to Disabled Persons. The award ceremony will take place on 23 June 2026 at 6 p.m. at the Pfefferberg Theater Berlin.
