And now Hanau
by Tuğsal Moğul
On February 19, 2020, a right-wing extremist known to the police shot and killed nine people with immigrant backgrounds in Hanau—one of the most brutal series of murders in recent German history, which has hardly been addressed to this day.
Theater author, director, actor, and doctor Tuğsal Moğul deals with the effects of racially motivated violence in Germany in his work. In his play, Moğul gives the victims a voice and questions the many mistakes made before, during, and after the attack by the police, the public prosecutor's office, politicians, and the media: The attacker was already known to the police as a right-wing extremist. Why wasn't he better monitored? Why was the 110 emergency number unavailable on the night of the attack? Why was the emergency exit in the Arena Bar locked? How is it possible that members of the SEK special forces who were at the scene were later exposed as right-wing extremists? In close cooperation with the »Initiative 19. Februar Hanau«” Moğul also asks about the consequences and demands a thorough investigation in order to bring justice to the victims and their families and to commemorate them.
The production follows the concept of the world premiere, which was created as a co-production between Theater Oberhausen, Theater Münster and the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen.
