Footnotes from the late 21st century
by Svealena Kutschke / Direction: Pablo Lawall / Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen
An ordinary open-plan office in a pretty ordinary administrative building in a pretty ordinary place. Sometime towards the end of this century. Hard-working people everywhere. They type, they tack, they staple, they photocopy, they get annoyed about the coffee cups being too small. Everything seems normal in the office, were it not for that strange ocean-blue stain on the wall, spreading almost unnoticeably, or the paranormal phenomenon that, almost in passing, reopens the wounds of everyday office life. There are signs of the looming disaster tearing the outside world to pieces. Democracy is at its end; various species are already extinct. Yet no matter how cracked the walls are, no matter what creatures are washed up in front of the printer: bureaucracy lives on merrily in (supposedly) stable safety behind the administrative walls, allowing all the interpersonal friction that is unique to office colleagues.
With the world premiere of the puppet theatre adaptation, director Pablo Lawall and MiR Puppentheater explore the extraordinary possibilities that can emerge from the encounter between new drama and puppetry, whilst also questioning our future in the light of climate catastrophe and the crisis of democracy.
