Elisabeth!
by Mareike Fallwickl / Direction: Fritzi Wartenberg / Burgtheater Vienna
Elisabeth enters the stage. She is Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary, an ideal of beauty, a wife, a mother, an athlete – and has been dead for over 100 years. How does she herself look back on her life in the 19th-century spotlight? On her being remembered as an icon in dozens of films and series. Sweets and souvenirs are decorated with Sisi’s face; she is Austria’s historic symbol, the darling of a nation. At the same time, she is described as an uncaring mother, as someone having an eating disorder, as vain and selfish. Who is the woman behind all the images and stories?
The young director Fritzi Wartenberg stages Mareike Fallwickl’s monologue and takes a multi-layered and feminist look at the Habsburg superstar.
