zwinger x rethinking remembrance
Reading and discussion with author Susanne Siegert about a new way of remembering the Holocaust
Zwinger 3
Our culture of remembrance must change. Susanne Siegert explains how and why in her book. She advocates for a pluralistic, new approach to remembrance that focuses on the responsibility of the descendants of the perpetrator generation instead of our »rehearsed« collective reflection with the victims. It deals with lesser-known Nazi crimes, lesser-known places, and previously neglected groups of victims. At the same time, this book shows how important a more active, more diverse culture of remembrance is in order to reach future generations even without direct eyewitness accounts.
Susanne Siegert, born in 1992, is a journalist and one of the most prominent voices in digital remembrance culture in Germany. She educates people about the Holocaust on Instagram (@keine.erinnerungskultur) and TikTok. She was awarded the Grimme Online Award in 2024 for her innovative and committed work, and received the Margot Friedländer Prize in 2025.
