Tom Rakewell is leading a peaceful life with his girlfriend Anne Trulove when the mysterious Nick Shadow appears out of the blue. He lures Tom with the promises of the modern world: freedom, money and success. Obsessed by those ideas, Rakewell leaves his girlfriend and plunges himself into London’s glittering life. However, his dream turns into a nightmare... In his only full-length opera, Igor Stravinsky furnishes the »career of a rake« with a relishing and whimsical soundscape brimming with (partly ironic) references to the music of Händel, Mozart and Beethoven.
