György Kurtág

»Grabstein für Stephan«, op. 15c

Alban Berg

Seven Early Songs

Gustav Mahler

Symphony No. 4 in G major

Soprano
Conductor
Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg

György Kurtág wrote »Grabstein für Stephan« in memory of the singer Stephan Stein. His wife had helped him out of a depression in Paris in 1956 and shaped his oeuvre when she recommended small, concentrated pieces. The »Grabstein«, however, grew into a forceful musical eulogy.

Alban Berg would later take a critical view of most of the songs he had written as a student. He did, however, create a cycle from a selection of these early compositions that continue to delight today.

Mahler’s fourth symphony is focused on the »Wunderhorn« poem »Das himmlische Leben«, an innocently naive vision of paradise – with fine cracks.
