Mother Courage and Her Children
A chronicle of the Thirty Years’ War / by Bertolt Brecht with music by Paul Dessau
Marguerre-Saal
[recommended for ages 15 and up]
Europe lies in tatters. The Thirty Years' War is raging. Millions of people have only ever known a wartime existence. One of them is Anna Fierling, called Mother Courage, who follows the army train as a trader. The war needs to nourish the war; Mother Courage has to feed her three children. With her cart, she pursues the troops as they criss-cross through Europe in order to make her small family's living. Her only fear is the looming peace, which could ruin her business. But war is a cruel business partner.
Bertolt Brecht's anti-war play is one of the most frequently staged plays in modern theatre, impressively demonstrating the disastrous consequences of violence and the commercialisation of war.
This production is accompanied by a programme from the Arts & Education team.
