Musical Direction and Moderation

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 was written in 1799 and premiered one year later. Its key is C major, a key that stands for enlightenment and a new beginning in the Viennese classical period. With the form of the symphony, Beethoven began a musical creation that became the centre of his compositional work. In length, instrumentation and style, Beethoven's first symphonic work is still reminiscent of Haydn and Mozart. Nevertheless, he already demonstrates here his very individual approach to musical elements such as motifs and form. In conversations and with musical examples, the new format takes a very close look at the background of this important work.
