4th Chamber Concert
Reynaldo Hahn: String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor / Peter I. Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in A Minor op. 50
Alter Saal
A discovery, at least in Germany, is the Venezuelan-born composer Reynaldo Hahn. He was the darling of Parisian salons and cafés in the 19th century, an esteemed Mozart conductor, a brilliant critic and composer, and later took French citizenship. He also wrote numerous chamber music works and his first string quartet enriched the repertoire.
At the beginning of 1881, Peter I. Tchaikovsky received news of his death: on 11 February, his long-time friend and patron Nikolai Rubinstein died at the age of 45. With the Piano Trio in A Minor, he created a memorial to the revered composer: »À la mémoire d'un grand artiste« (To the memory of a great artist).
