Espressione
Sergei Prokofiev
Sonate für zwei Violinen C-Dur
Ludwig van Beethoven
Septet in E flat major, op. 20
The first chamber concert brings together two works featuring an unusual combination of instruments: in his Sonata for Two Violins, Sergei Prokofiev has the two instruments at times blend together and at times clash in a virtuosic manner.
Beethoven’s Septet, by contrast, combines strings and wind instruments to form a richly coloured ensemble that shifts between chamber music and symphonic sonority. This cheerful and lively septet has long been – alongside Schubert’s Octet – one of the most popular works of chamber music for larger ensembles.
On five Sundays of the season, the Alte Saal opens its doors at 11 am for special musical encounters. The chamber concerts feature members of Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg and invite the audience to rediscover works with a small number of instruments and in a personal setting: spirited chamber music full of diversity and surprises.
