Cooperation Theatre and School
The cooperation between theatre and schools enters its 15th season in 2025/26! Holger Schultze began his directorship in Heidelberg in September 2011 with the ambitious plan to walk through the Neckarstadt in a few years' time and no longer meet any schoolchildren who are unfamiliar with the term »theatre«.
By the end of Holger Schultze's directorship, this ambitious plan is likely to have been successfully implemented, as in the summer of 2026, around 256,000 visits to the theatre by schoolchildren from secondary schools are expected to have taken place during his entire directorship (2011 to 2026) as part of the cooperation between theatre and school at the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg. In addition, during the same period, numerous young people from these cooperation schools will have seen several performances per season as part of their Young Subscription.
By regularly attending the theatre, the pupils at the cooperation schools get to know their theatre and take part in the artistic and cultural life of our society. The cooperation is an important component of cultural education and complements the aesthetic and artistic education within the school curriculum. It not only enables them to familiarise themselves with the various genres and art forms, but also to participate in culture - regardless of their origin, religion, nationality or previous experience.
As early as Holger Schultze's first season in 2011/12, 19 schools took part in the theatre and school cooperation. In his last season 2025/26, 45 secondary schools (private and state) are cooperating with the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg - all types of schools are represented: from community schools and secondary schools to grammar schools, vocational schools and special education and counselling centres (SBBZ) from Heidelberg and the surrounding area.
