Benjamin Bruhns

Benjamin Bruns began his singing career as an alto soloist in the boys' choir in his home town of Hanover. While still studying at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, he was offered his first permanent engagement by the Bremen Theatre, which enabled him to build up a wide-ranging repertoire early on and was soon followed by an ensemble contract at the Cologne Opera. Via the Saxon State Opera in Dresden, his path led him directly to the Vienna State Opera, where he was a member of the ensemble from June 2010 to June 2020. Oratorio and lieder singing form an important counterpoint to his stage work. His concert repertoire focuses on works by Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn. He performs with major German and international orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Academy of Ancient Music Berlin, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Bach Collegium Japan, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra and the choir and orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. In the 2023/24 season, Benjamin Bruns will make a guest appearance as the Emperor in Strauss' »Frau ohne Schatten« at the Staatsoper Stuttgart. At the Bayrische Staatsoper, he will perform Wagner's »Lohengrin« and Piet vom Fass in Ligeti's »Le Grand Macabre«. He will sing Haydn's »The Creation« under Sir Simon Rattle and Mahler's 8th Symphony under Kirill Petrenko. He will also sing Beethoven's 9th Symphony in Bamberg, Mahler's »Das Lied von der Erde« in Lahti, Mendelssohn's »Paulus« in Madrid, Bach's »St Matthew Passion« in Japan and Mahler's »Das Lied von der Erde«.
