Philipp Mathmann

Philipp Mathmann's singular voice surprises with its natural high notes and bright clarity and fascinates with its intensity. The young German singer is now one of the most internationally sought-after countertenors of his generation. He grew up in Lippstadt, where he began his vocal training with Friederike Vomhof-Surrey and Heike Hallaschka. Since his operatic debut in 2011 in the opera pastiche »La Mara« at the Theatre of Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, he has been a regular guest at international music festivals. One focus of his work is early music. In 2018, he made his debut in Moscow at the Stanislavsky Theatre and was nominated for the Golden Mask Award as »Best Opera Actor«. His opera engagements have taken him to the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Aalto Theater in Essen, the Theater an der Wien, the Chekhov Art Theatre in Moscow and numerous major music festivals. Philipp Mathmann does not limit himself to the baroque repertoire. In 2021/22, he sang the role of the Angel in the world premiere of Thorsten Rasch's »Die andere Frau« at the Semperoper Dresden and the Scorpion Man in Jörg Widmann's opera »Babylon« at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden. In concert, he works with some of the most renowned early music ensembles such as the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln and conductors such as Christophe Rousset, Gianluca Capuano and Diego Fasolis. After his first CD »La deposizione dalla croce di Gesu Cristo« by F. X. Richter, which was released in 2017, his first solo album »Tormenti d'Amore« followed in 2020 with three world premiere recordings.
