by Levan Khetaguri, Tengiz Khukhia and Elene Matskhonahvili / Stage Director: Elene Matskhonashvil / GRTN Georgian Regional Theatres Network
Two exceptional examples of Elene Matskhonahvili's theatre endeavouring biographical research with the poetic means of puppet playing.
On the occasion of the Georgian writer’s 180th birthday, »Niko Nikoladze« presents his public work as publisher, scientist, politician, pedagogue and statesman. Nikoladze's long and productive life was shaped by important political events like the founding of the first Georgian Republic (1918-1921). Two puppets and four performers recount the life, convictions and activities of Niko Nikoladze.
On the occasion of his 100th birthday, »Sergei Parajanov« shows the life and workings of the world famous film director and screenwriter in a unique performance with puppets and objects. Born in Georgia, Parajanov worked in the Ukraine and died in Armenia. He invented his own film style contradicting the principles of social realism. This fact as well as his life style meant that the Soviet authorities pursued and detained him repeatedly and banned his films. Parajanov’s unique vision and artistic style made him a legend in the film industry and beyond. While his influence and his legacy are enormous, they are often overlooked. This production introduced the artist to a wider audience.
