Sofia Gubaidulina: String Quartet No. 3 / György Ligeti: 6 Bagatelles from »Musica ricercata« for Wind Quintet / Emilie Mayer: String Quartet in E Minor
Alter Saal
Romanticism and Modernity: With her String Quartet No. 3 from 1987, Sofia Gubaidulina (*1931) created her very own form. Large parts of the piece require the musicians to play their instruments »con le dita«, with their fingers, instead of with their bow. This creates fascinating sounds, turning the notes that are later played with the bow into sensations.
The Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet are part of the early works of György Ligeti (1923-2006) and were written in 1953. This cycle is a textbook example of the art of combining and balancing out minimalist structures and an opulent range of timbres.
Emilie Mayer’s music shows her strong sense of melody and dynamics. This diversity is also inherent to her chamber music, holding new twists time and again. Composed according to a classical structure, her String Quartet in E Minor with four movements is no exception.
