Elisabeth Auer trained as an actress at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Stuttgart and studied singing at Opernschule Heidelberg/Mannheim. She received her first engagement at Nationaltheater Mannheim from 1980 to 1987. Further engagements were at Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Nationaltheater Mannheim again vom 1997 to 2000 and most recently at Theater und Orchester Heidelberg from 2000 to 2005. Since 2006 Elisabeth Auer has worked freelance at various theatres, in Wiesbaden, Oldenburg, Stuttgart and Bonn.
With the Neues Ensemble Mannheim, which she co-founded in 2006, she has realised numerous readings, performances and world premieres, among others by Marguerite Duras, Marie Ndiaye, Ethel Adnan and Peter Handke, most recently »Leben.Schreiben« by Annie Ernaux and the world premiere »Die Krankheit Wunder« by Roberta Dapunt. The production »GaiaGlobalCircus« by Bruno Latour premiered in Mannheim in 2023. Elisabeth Auer has been a regular guest at Theater und Orchester Heidelberg, including in 2018 in »Am Königsweg« by Elfriede Jelinek, in 2019 in the world premiere of »Drift« by Ulrike Syha, in 2023 in »Der goldene Topf« based on E. T. A. Hoffmann and in 2024 in »Zusammenstoß« by Kurt Schwitters and Ludger Vollmer.
