Schloss Heidelberg

Dicker Turm / Englischer Bau / Schlosshof

Schlosshof 1
69117 Heidelberg
Heidelberg's castle ruins are not only considered the most visited in Germany. It is also home to the most beautiful venues of the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg, which are performed in summer as part of the Heidelberger Schlossfestpiele.

Closure of access to the castle car park via Neue Schlossstraße

Access to the car parks at the castle via Neue Schlossstraße is closed to cars for the entire duration of the festival due to construction work. A signposted diversion via Hausackerweg has been set up.
Please note that this may lead to longer journey times. Please use the mountain railway if possible.

Travelling by bike

A cycle lane towards the castle has been set up in the Neue Schlossstraße construction site area. Please check the current situation at short notice.

Access for pedestrians

Access via the Kurzen Buckel, Burgweg and Schlossberg is guaranteed at all times.

The most comfortable and easiest way to reach the Schlossberg is to take the mountain railway, which will take you from Heidelberg's Old Town to the entrance to the Schlossgarten in just a few minutes and back to the Old Town up to 30 minutes after the end of the performance. The service is suspended during the performance and at later times.
To avoid queues and delays, please use funiculars leaving between 6.45 p.m. and 8.15 p.m. You might not make it in time if you take later rides.
The valley station of the cable car is located in Bremeneckgasse near Kornmarkt (accessible by bus lines 20 and 36).

You can also reach the castle on foot from the Old Town by climbing a flight of stairs (»Kurzer Buckel«) from the valley station of the mountain railway. Pedestrian access via the Kurzer Buckel, Burgweg and Schlossberg is guaranteed at all times.

On the day of the event and for up to four hours before the start, tickets for the Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele serve as tickets for bus, tram and designated trains within the fare zones of Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN) and Heidelberg’s funicular from Kornmarkt station to the castle and back. It is therefore worthwhile collecting reserved tickets before the day of the performance.
Information about the timetables is available at www.vrn.de or by calling the service number 0621 / 1077 077; €0.14 per minute or part thereof from a landline.

You can reach the city of Heidelberg by car from the A 5 motorway via the Heidelberg motorway junction. From the A 6 motorway, take the A 656 towards Heidelberg via the Mannheim motorway junction.

There are hardly any parking facilities on the Schlossberg. In addition, access to the car parks via Neue Schlossstraße will be closed to cars during the 2024 Schlossfestspiele due to construction work. Please note the information on the access situation in summer 2024.
Drivers are strongly advised to leave their cars in one of the multi-storey car parks in Heidelberg's Old Town and to use the mountain railway. The P12 Kornmarkt/Schloss multi-storey car park is located directly at the valley station of the mountain railway. You can find out about parking facilities in advance at parken.heidelberg.de; on site, please use the city's parking guidance system. You can also use the parking guidance system to find your way from all major access roads to Heidelberg and from the feeder road from the Heidelberg motorway junction.

Please note that wheelchair access to the Dicker Turm and the Englischer Bau is unfortunately not possible for safety reasons; to the Schlosshof only subject to seat availability and by prior arrangement at the theatre box office on 06221 / 5820 000.
