Jürgen Popig was born in Esslingen am Neckar in 1961 and studied literature, sociology, history and theatre studies in Stuttgart and Munich. He began working as a dramaturge in Singen/Hohentwiel in 1986 (organising and running the Kleintheatertage Baden-Württemberg), changed to Theater Freiburg in 1989 and to the Staatstheater Stuttgart in 1993, where he worked for twelve years. Since 2005 he has been head dramaturge at Osnabrück Theatre. In addition to his dramaturgical work, Popig also works as an author and translator of theatre plays. Together with Felix Huby, he wrote the play »Schwabenblues« for the 2005 Theatre of the World festival in Stuttgart, which is still running there. In 2009, he wrote the film adaptation »Shoppen« for the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin. Popig wrote »Lale Andersen – Solo für eine wilde alte Dame« for Osnabrück Theatre, dramatised a series of children's book classics (most recently »Tom Sawyer's Adventures«, 2010) and translated Louis Nowra's comedy »Cosí« into German. He was a lecturer at the Universität Osnabrück and is on the artistic advisory board of the Grabbe-Gesellschaft and a member of literary juries.
From 2011/12 to 2023/24, Jürgen Popig held the position of Head Drama Director at the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg. He has been Artistic Director of the Heidelberger Stückemarkt since 2011/12.
