The Tale of the Little Mermaid
a very free interpretation after Hans Christian Andersen by Roland Schimmelpfennig
Zwinger 3
It is hot. So terribly hot and dusty. Thus ponder three friends as they stand on a beach and look out over the wide, glistening sea. They live in a small village where the sun beats down without mercy and there is nothing there apart from the factory and the café Neptune. Hence the three are dreaming of making a deal with the witch: they will give up their names and then go out onto the sea in a boat to the magical underwater kingdom where they will be mer-princes and mer-princesses. Anything is possible in that kingdom and they are looking forward to the grand welcome awaiting them there. But that's all a dream – or is it?
Roland Schimmelpfennig, one of the most frequently performed contemporary playwrights in Germany, has adapted the classic fairy tale for the Remmidemmi festival to create a tale about the refugee experience that is suitable for children.
»The Tale of the Little Mermaid« will premiere as part of Remmidemmi. The Resistance Festival and can be seen on 7., 8. and 9. October 2022 on Route 1: Boycotters and Route 2: Dissidents.
