The young scriptwriter Joe Gillis is dreaming of making it big in Hollywood until he happens upon the great silent movie diva Norma Desmond. Andrew Lloyd Webber's global hit musical, based on Billy Wilder's film noir »Sunset Boulevard«, will be shown to live audiences in Heidelberg for the first time. Lloyd Webber tells the moving tale of a star battling oblivion – it is a struggle against age, loneliness and isolation.

This production is accompanied by a programme from the Arts & Education team.

Von einer »umjubelten Premiere« berichtet Eckhard Britsch im Mannheimer Morgen (30. Januar 2023). »Brillant« fülle Carolyn Frank »die vielen Facetten« der Figur Norma Desmond aus, auch die vielen anderen Rollen seien »allesamt sehr gut, weil individuell besetzt«. Die »aufwendige Produktion« mit »einprägsamen Bildern«, »raffinierten Projektionen« und »quirligen Tanzszenen« würden dem Musical ein »plastisches Gesicht« verleihen – »befeuert von tollen Songs« und dem Philharmonischen Orchester, das unter der Leitung von Dietger Holm aus dem Graben heraus »kräftig powert und passgenau zum Bühnengeschehen musiziert«.

Für die Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung (28. Januar 2023) sah Daniel Schottmüller eine »bombastische Inszenierung« des Musicals mit »beeindrucken[d] choreografierten Kostüm- und Bühnenbildwechsel[n]«, der man bis zum Ende »gespannt« folge. Regisseur Felix Seiler habe mit der Besetzung von Carolyn Frank, die hier eine »Rückkehr ins Rampenlicht [feiert]«, wie ihre Norma Desmond sie sich erträumt, einen »echten Besetzungscoup« gelandet.
