Nebuchadnezzar
Baroque opera in three acts by Reinhard Keiser
Rokokotheater Schwetzingen
Nebuchadnezzar is haunted by his dreams. Having succumbed to megalomania, the Babylonian King appoints himself as godlike ruler and perpetrates injustices on those of different faiths. Prince Darius not only has to decide between Nebuchadnezzar’s daughter and his former lover, Princess Barsine, he also has to deal with the advances of the Queen Adina, who knows how to eliminate her own daughter as a rival. The events at the King’s court come thick and fast. Nebuchadnezzar has a divine vision and succumbs to madness; he is chased from court.
We were able to win the well-known baroque recorder player and conductor Dorothee Oberlinger as Musical Director of this rediscovery. Originally composed by Reinhard Keiser for Hamburg’s Gänsemarktoper in 1704, the opera is based on a groundbreaking dramaturgic concept that lets the audience experience the story primarily via the emotional state of its characters and convinces with its superb »arias of love and pain«, promising a celebration of voices.
