Eugen Onegin
Lyrical scenes in three acts by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky
Marguerre-Saal
[recommended for ages 15 and up]
Tatiana sees the world through her books, quite unlike her sister Olga who has a zest for life and arouses the poet Lensky’s passion. When Lensky introduces Eugene Onegin to the sisters that world suddenly becomes real for Tatiana as well. In a long letter to Onegin, she reveals her feelings for him, realising herself that she is in love. But Onegin rejects Tatiana. Years later, when Onegin meets the now married Tatiana, he admits his fatal mistake. Even though Tatiana still has feelings for him, Onegin’s profession comes too late.
Tchaikovsky put a lot of emphasis on transforming the poetry of Pushkin’s verses into music. Consequently, he called his piece »lyrical scenes«. Premiering at the Moscow Conservatory in 1879, their success was limited. After their second performance in Saint Petersburg a few years later, however, they became a frequently played masterpiece.
