Hamlet
Tragedy by William Shakespeare
Marguerre-Saal
[recommended for ages 16 and up]
Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, is a student at Wittenberg. When his father dies, Hamlet returns home to the Danish royal castle of Elsinore. Upon his arrival, he finds not a community of mourners, but a wedding party. His mother Gertrud has married Claudius, her deceased husband's brother. Hamlet is visited by an apparition: the ghost of the king, his dead father. The spirit reveals to Hamlet that he did not, as is officially claimed, die of a snakebite, but was poisoned – by Claudius. He asks Hamlet to avenge his murder. Hamlet does not really believe in ghosts. What is to be done? He keeps postponing his act of revenge. Until it is almost too late.
Shakespeare's »Hamlet«, one of the most famous plays in the world, is an ingenious mixture of deep, pensive drama and lurid revenge tragedy. Eight lives are claimed.
